Residents have opportunities to donate food, toys

Southlake residents who want to make children’s wishes come true for Christmas have a few more opportunities.
Christmas is for Children is one effort aimed to provide food and gifts to needy families across the Metroplex.
Southlake has a variety of events associated with Christmas is for Children.
On Dec. 15, St. John Baptist Church, 800 Kimball Drive, will host the 12th annual food drive.
Until Dec. 24, the Southlake Department of Public Safety will collect gifts and food at its two locations: Fire Station No. 1, 600 State Street; and Fire Station No. 2, 2100 W. Southlake Blvd. Leftover items will be saved to go into other efforts, such as Summer Santa, Santa Cops and Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange (GRACE).
The Westlake DPS is also collecting items at its fire station, 2900 Dove Road.
On Monday, area agencies will pick up Angel gift bags, which were sent out last weekend by ALTRUSA DFW to collect food from area neighborhoods and businesses.
And residents who wish to make monetary donations can send them to: Christmas is for Children, P.O. Box 92833, Southlake, Texas 76092.
“Considering how the economy has been, Christmas is for Children has been hugely successful,” said Lisa Angeli, of Christmas is for Children. “We adopt 1,400 angels each year, sometimes as much as 1,500. Usually we provide between 1,200 to 1,300 food baskets each year as well.”
Angeli said the success can be attributed to the generosity of Southlake residents and businesses.
“This really relies on the support of Southlake because the city allows us into the schools, homes and businesses so that we can do this,” Angeli said. “Southlake carries us.”
Residents can also bring a variety of items to the Christmas Cottage, 2845 Exchange Blvd., Suite 300 through Dec. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Items requested are children’s gifts and toys; appliances and gift cards for adults, wrapping paper, tape, bows and batteries.
The Christmas Cottage, set up by GRACE, allows parents to shop for their children’s gifts in a store-like setting, which organizers say gives parents a sense of pride when shopping. Families must be qualified by GRACE to participate, and they must make an appointment.
GRACE officials say the Christmas Cottage is expected to serve more than 600 families, including 1,600 children, in the Grapevine/Southlake/Colleyville area.
