College Street hosts kinder car show
From staff reports
Lewisville's pride and tradition is displayed even at elementary schools. Each year, College Street Elementary School hosts its "Kindergarten Car Show." During the 44th annual show and parade May 18, students "drove" their homemade cars around for attendees that the entire school body, parents, teachers and community members to admire. The car show was the culmination of an extensive learning project completed by the kindergarten students.
Parents and teachers collaborated to help students create cars using materials from home. Through the process, students learned about collaboration, communication and teamwork as well as citizenship, safety and how important it is to follow directions.
"This active participation really helps build the learning community," said Cynthia Jaird, principal. "Students collaborate, communicate and follow directions throughout the process of building their car and participating in the parade, and learn citizenship through lessons on car and driver safety."
Teacher Debbie Rush has coordinated the car show for the past 23 years, but will be retiring at the end of this school year after 36 years in education. Staff, parents and community members bid a farewell to Rush during the event. Though Rush is retiring, the College Street Car Show will continue.
