Baseball: Marcus' Poche' weighing options following draft
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
It has been Colin Poche's lifelong dream to play professional baseball. Now that the opportunity has presented itself, the senior pitcher is deciding if the time is right to begin his professional endeavors or if he wants to continue with his education and play collegiately.
The recent Marcus graduate was drafted in the fifth round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles (No. 162) last week after previously signing to play in college at the University of Arkansas.
"I'm pretty excited," Poche' said. "I'm ready to get going, but right now we are still in the process of negotiating. As of right now, I'm planning as if I'm going to be going to Arkansas ... I don't know it just still doesn't all seem real right now."
"I got a call from some members of the Orioles organization earlier and they said it could be me they were picking," he added. "But they were still about 10 or 15 picks away. So we were just waiting around and watching the draft tracker online and I saw the Orioles come up and my name scroll across. It was an incredible feeling."
The hurler is now debating if he wants to sign and begin his career or pass and continue to Arkansas. If he selects the latter, he won't be eligible for the draft again until he has completed three years of college.
If he signs, he would ship out to Sarasota, Fla. for a training camp followed by rookie ball.
"I've talked to some of my summer teammates and some other guys and a few of them have already signed," Poche' said. "But I'm what some call a projectable player meaning what you see right now isn't exactly what you are going to get. I have a natural delivery and I think as I mature and get bigger and stronger, I can get even better. It's a tough decision."
Poche' has until July 13 to decide but that he expects to make a decision within the next week.
