Mesquite ISD teams dominate 11-5A all-district softball team

Published: Wednesday, May 23, 2012 7:37 PM CDT
Horn, Mesquite and North Mesquite continued their dominance of their 11-5A counterparts this season.

The Jaguars, Skeeters and Stallions were undefeated against the other three district teams on their way to a 1-2-3 finish in the 11-5A standings.

Those results were reflected on the all-district team, where MISD teams claimed five of the six superlative awards and 16 of the 19 places on the first team.

In the three-way battle for the 11-5A title, it was Horn that rose to the top, completing a 10-0 run to a perfect district crown.

The Jaguars earned three superlative honors and had five additional players named to the first team.

Senior Hayley LeMonds had a huge season at the plate and she was rewarded by being named offensive player of the year. Lemonds led the team in several categories, hitting .505 with six triples, five home runs, 22 runs batted in.

Freshman Aubree Tuberville was named co-newcomer of the year after batting.280 and providing solid defense.

Patty Dyer was named coach of the year after leading the Jaguars back to the playoffs and the 11-5A championship, finishing with a 24-9 record.

Ashley Moore led a quintet of Horn players on the first team. Moore posted an 18-7 record with a 1.73 earned run average and 138 strikeouts.

The Jaguars had three infielders named to the first team in Kelsea Fite (.400, 22 RBIs), Kaitlyn Stinson (21 RBIs) and Andrea Trevino (.365, six doubles). Outfielder Colleen Harrison, who posted a .413 batting average, rounded out the first-team honorees.

Mesquite finished second in 11-5A but made the most noise in the playoffs as the only team to get out of the first round. After rallying past A&M Consolidated in dramatic fashion in the bi-district round, the Skeeters had the tables turned on them in the area finals, where McKinney Boyd overcame an opening-game loss with back-to-back wins to claim the series.

Mesquite (17-10) had four players named to the first team and one superlative award winner with Tori Bice, who was named 11-5A defensive player of the year.

Bice shouldered the pitching load, posting a 1.07 ERA and averaging better than one strikeout per inning. She also did the job at the plate, where she hit better than .500 and more than half her hits went for extra bases.

Three Mesquite seniors made the first team, including Halee Pryor, who hit .333, Tori Hunter and Bailey Stokes, who led the team in home runs. They were joined on the first team by sophomore Kelsi Coleman.

North Mesquite might have been somewhat overshadowed during the regular season with its third-place finish but that was not the case with the postseason honors, as the Stallions had eight players recognized, including most valuable player Paige Stevens.

The senior led the team in hitting with a .543 batting average and was a force on the base paths, leading the district with 32 stolen bases. Stevens also picked up part of the responsibility on the mound, making several starts and adding three saves.

Paige Draughn, North Mesquite's other top option on the mound, posted 10 victories and also hit .338. Haylie Campbell hit .506 with 12 doubles and 32 RBIs, while Tiara Mickens posted a .444 average with five triples and 12 stolen bases.

Rounding out the first-team selections for North Mesquite were juniors Rayla Goodson, Cece Gonzales and Blake Stonebarger, as well as sophomore Katelyn White.

The only non-MISD athlete to earn a superlative award was Tyler Lee's McKinna Aycock, who was named co-newcomer of the year.

DISTRICT 10-5A: Rowlett's Dozier named MVP

Rowlett senior Breanna Dozier has been a leader for the Eagles since her freshman season. While the results on the field were not what Rowlett had hoped to see when it was all said and done, Dozier did all she could do as she was named 10-5A most valuable player.

Dozier was one of the most dangerous offensive players in the area. She hit .554 with nine doubles, 11 home runs and 36 runs batted in. To top it off, she added 14 stolen bases.

Dozier was joined by three teammates on the 10-5A first team. Spencer Farrell was honored after hitting .478 with 15 stolen bases.

Tyler Casada hit .400 this season, while Peyton Fairchild posted a .378 batting average to go along with her role as the team's top pitcher.

Sachse had three players named to the first team, including senior Demi Thompson, who was named defensive player of the year. Senior Brooke Jones and junior Meredith Crain were also named to the first team.

District champion McKinney Boyd, which was undefeated in 10-5A play, captured the remaining superlative honros.

Mo McDonald was named offensive player of the year, McKenna Henry was tabbed newcomer of the year, Erin Riding won pitcher of the year honors and Maureen Fritz was honored as coach of the year.

The Broncos will be leaving for a new district next season and that might be good news for the remaining Garland ISD teams, as all of McKinney Boyd's recognized players were underclassmen this year.
