CSHS principal could be named Monday; Rhodes reflects on time at school

The Carroll ISD Board of Trustees could name a new principal for Carroll Senior High School on Monday, said district spokeswoman Julie Thannum.

An advisory committee was expected to interview four candidates Tuesday, with the committee possibly making a recommendation to the board at next week’s meeting.

The new hire will take over for Mike Rhodes, who has been the school’s principal for the last three years.

Rhodes is retiring at the end of this school year after spending 31 years in education, 22 as principal.

Rhodes said he will miss the relationships he established during his time in the district.

“I’m most proud of how I was able to get to know the students and the relationships and rapport I built with the students, parents and staff members,” Rhodes said. “We were able to promote the success we’re known for, and we’ve had unprecedented success if you look at what we accomplish this year.”

Among those were state championships in football, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls swimming and most recently Courtney Krieghauser, who took home a state track and field championship in the 1,600-meter run.

Rhodes was quick to point out the state championships in non-athletic programs as well, such as the robotics club, band, choir, problem solving and Chinese competition.

He noted that Carroll reached the district round of the playoffs/competition in all but one activity.

“I hope we created a place where students can experience success and for them to never think that if they’re not in athletics that they’re not valued or not appreciated,” Rhodes said.

Rhodes said the success was made in part because of community support.

“Our parents are highly supportive of our school,” Rhodes said. “They want an exemplary program, and I hope that we provided that for them.”

Rhodes said Carroll was the perfect place for him to retire.

“I’m most proud that I was able to end my career here,” Rhodes said. “We always talk about exemplary campuses and excellent schools, and we do have a wonderful group of students.”

Rhodes led a variety of schools before coming to Carroll ranging from Class 2A and 3A schools to two 4A schools. Among those was Andrews High School, which Carroll played in a classic football playoff game in 2001.

The game featured a big comeback by the Dragons after falling behind early.

“That was my first experience with Carroll,” Rhodes said. “It was one of those memorable experiences. At that time, I never dreamed that God would open the door to allow my family to move to Carroll. I wish I had gotten here earlier.”

As far as Rhodes’ replacement, Carroll is using the same community-based system it has used for years when hiring principals in the district.

The committee is run by Dr. JJ Villareal, assistant superintendent for student services, and includes a mix of parents, teachers and administrators.

“We want more than just one or two people’s opinion,” Thannum said. “This is a complete screening process. Sometimes the committee is mixed on the decision, so they bring in two candidates so the superintendent sees more than one viewpoint. We like to see one rise above the rest, but sometimes there are different views.”

Thannum said 186 people applied for the job, and the committee trimmed that number down to seven. Four of those came in for the interview.
