Air show in area this weekend

Mesquite is putting the full-court-press on its efforts to get the word out about the Take to the Skies Airfest, scheduled for Saturday, May 26, and Sunday, May 27, at the Mesquite Metro Airport, 1340 Airport Blvd. The air show is expected to be the largest of its type in the Metroplex. Organizers are expecting to draw attendees from across the state to witness the event.
“We are expecting 10,000 people,” said Cynthia Godfrey, airport manager. “The planes are already starting to come in. Everything is going really well.”
According to city officials plans for the event are going smoothly.
Since the planning began for the event, the air show has managed to secure the world’s smallest jet airplane, according to Godfrey.
As part of the events opening night festivities, the air show will have a balloon glow event.
“We will have 10 to 14 balloons on Saturday night,” Godfrey said. “There will be no balloons Sunday since the event ends at 7 [p.m.].”
Godrey indicated that there would be a children’s area set up with activities such as jump houses to keep the children entertained.
To get the word out for the event the city has used all the resources it has including radio and television advertisements.
“At our planning meeting the show’s producer seemed to have some things in the works with several media outlets,” said Wayne Larson, communications manager. “We have done everything we can do from a city perspective.”
The event is scheduled to be a full air show with stunt flying, racing and demonstrations. The organizers want to expose people to the world of aviation.
