Early voting begins Monday for state primaries
By Bill Conrad, bconrad@starlocalnews.com
After countless delays and court decisions, early voting for the state Republican and Democratic primaries begins Monday.
The race for the Republican presidential nominee is all but settled, but Plano voters will have their say in who the nominees will be for several state and national offices, including one state House district which has drawn five Republican challengers.
Plano is divided into four state House districts, but the candidates for two of the districts are running unopposed. Van Taylor will be the Republican nominee in District 66, while Jodie Laubenberg will once again represent District 89 on the November ballot. No Democrats have filed to run for either seat, virtually guaranteeing both Taylor and Laubenberg will be in Austin for the 83rd Legislature.
State Senate District 8, which has been held since the early 1990s by Florence Shapiro, is up for grabs after Shapiro announced her retirement in the fall. One Republican, Ken Paxton, and one Democrat, Jack Ternan, are seeking the seat. Ternan is the only Democrat who has filed for an office representing a portion of Plano.
There is also no opposition from either major party for Matt Shaheen, a Republican incumbent seeking a second term as County Commissioner for Precinct 1, which covers portions of central and western Plano.
Early voting hours in Collin County are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. from May 14-18, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on May 19, 1-6 p.m. on May 20, and 7 a.m.-7 p.m. from May 21-25. During the early voting period, voters may vote at any location in the county. Plano voters who reside in Denton County may vote at any early voting location in that county.
