Guest column: Kroger -- we can’t afford another lost opportunity

Published: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 1:24 PM CDT
Recently my opponent offered up the observation that best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. Strange as it may sound, I agree with that statement.

Late last year, the two voting members of the NFL slate denied Kroger an opportunity to expand, remodel and invest $14 million in Flower Mound.

* The NFL ignored the expressed wishes of over 1,000 residents who signed petitions in support of Kroger’s expansion and fuel station.

* The NFL ignored the informed observations of safety professionals and trained traffic engineers.

* The NFL chose to allow an aging store to remain at the busiest intersection in town, risking the future economic vitality at the core of our community.

The NFL denied a $40 million dollar project that would have created an age-restricted, senior rental housing option for our residents. They did this within days of taking office.

* A product offering that was not available in Flower Mound that would meet a growing consumer demand.

* The developer would have paid $1.2 million in dedicated park funding as well as full value in property taxes to both the town and school district.

Instead the NFL approved a senior housing project that features increased density. When we could have had affordable senior housing we get housing that will not be affordable to many of our older residents. We will have a project that provides less property tax revenue and 80 percent less park funding.

What is interesting is that the original plan will be built. It just will not be built in Flower Mound. It is being built in Lantana, today.

This is Al Filidoro’s past behavior and as he says, it is the best predictor of future behavior. The only way to stop sending quality development to Lantana, and other communities, is to make a change at town hall. Flower Mound can’t afford another two years of Al Filidoro leading the NFL.

This May, vote for Bryan Webb for Place 2 on Flower Mound Town Council, and keep our future opportunities here, in Flower Mound. Together, we can move Flower Mound forward.
