Council to discuss charter, economic development
By Chris Roark, croark@acnpapers.com
The Flower Mound Town Council will meet twice this week to discuss the town charter and economic development programs.
The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to address the charter review process. The meeting will include a presentation by Rick Lust, the chairman of the Charter Review Committee. Lust is expected to give an update on the process, which began in January and could conclude this week. The committee made recommendations at its Feb. 2 meeting on which items should be included on a ballot for an upcoming election. Wednesday’s meeting will also include a public hearing.
The council will take those recommendations and determine what items, if any, should be placed on the ballot for the May 12 election.
Others say the process is not going too fast and say the commission is well-informed and prepared to make recommendations to the council.
The committee is set to meet Thursday to finalize its recommendations made at the Feb. 2 meeting. Those include a charter amendment requiring that any change to the oil and gas ordinance must be considered at a public hearing and that it must take a supermajority vote to change it. Term limits and council compensation are also items expected to be sent to the council.
Also Thursday, the council will host a work session to discuss economic development programs. Representatives from TIP Strategies, who provided economic development incentive work in 2006, will present details on its services.
Also, representatives from The Retail Coach will discuss services they provide. The Retail Coach provides a detailed community analysis and a retail recruitment strategy.

" The FM Council wants to put the Charter Review recommendations on the May 12 ballot so the voters can determine what is best for the future of their town. How can anyone disagree with allowing residents to have a say regarding issues like gas drilling, which may have a deleterious effect on the health and safety of their families? There is still much that is not known about the effects from the deadly chemicals used in the fracking process. A few years from now those effects may result in medical problems that are irreversible. Meanwhile, the gas company execs will have made their money and have moved on to other communities across the state and the country. We must keep in mind that they are doing it for the money and probably have no compunction about the possible after-effects suffered by those who will be sacrificed to their greed. If 65,000 residents are going to be exposed to this new threat to their health, they should at least be allowed to vote for or against it. "
