Shoven files for LISD

Paige Shoven said her decision to run for Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees was about five years in the making.
Tuesday, she made it official by filing to run for Place 1 in the May 12 election.
She will be facing former board member Kathy Duke, who announced last month she is running for the place vacated by Tom Ferguson.
“There were things going on in 2007 that I didn’t agree with,” Shoven said. “I was pretty upset about those things, but I didn’t run for school board back then because I wanted to make sure I did it for the children, not because I was angry at the adults.”
Shoven said some of the issues she was concerned about include rezoning.
“I got involved because of changes in the boundary lines,” Shoven said. “I began speaking out at board meetings as well as city council meetings. The district was putting adults first and children second. I think if it doesn’t make sense for the children, then you shouldn’t do it.”
There are no rezoning issues planned for 2012, but Shoven said there needs to be more openness between the district and the community for future plans.
“There have been a lot of concerns in this district about zoning,” Shoven said. “I don’t want to keep changing the zoning. I would like parents to have the opportunity to give the child what he or she needs. I would like to see more open dialogue about what is the best fit for their child.”
Shoven said the budget is another key issue.
“The district is losing money again this year,” she said. “We need to be hands on and make sure the money is going to be spent in a fiscally responsible way so that it impacts the students in the least possible way.”
Shoven said she is happy with the direction LISD has taken under the leadership of Dr. Stephen Waddell, superintendent, particularly the efforts to get community involvement in key decisions.
“I’m excited about the open communication between the district, the staff, the community and the teachers,” Shoven said. “That was one of the things I was upset about earlier.”
Shoven, a manager for an optometrist company, has served on the PTA at the local council and area levels. She has served as president for four years, as well as treasurer, parliamentarian, vice president of programs, diversity chairperson, vendor fair coordinator and directory coordinator.

" Oh No - an angry voice?? You must be referencing Kathy. After all she lost because "there was no active election in Highland Village". What a joke!
She lost because she was spending YOUR money at a rate faster than we could bring more money back in
Kathy Duke is a rerun - yesterday's news - Look to the future - not the past. "

Just because you are an angry voice doesn't mean you are the voice of reason...
At least the opposition has a reasonable platform "
