Elected officials from four counties, 10 cities and various state positions gather in the Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB) warehouse on Wednesday afternoon to have lunch and be recognized for their efforts in collecting food to help fight the growing hunger problem in North Texas..
Mayor Pro-tem Virginia Muzyka and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Laura Hill were in attendance representing Southlake at the National Hunger Action Month Event.
This why cities not only need be applauded for past efforts but reminded that food is needed now more than ever.
State legislatures were also honored for their recent votes that helped to get HB1622 also called the “Children’s Access to Nutritious Food Program Act.” According to a press release from the food bank the bill would grant funds to nonprofit organizations such as Texas regional food banks to provide children at risk of hunger or obesity access to nutritious food outside of the school day. This program is yet to have funding.
The lunch also served as a time for TAFB to meet the elected officials in the cities and make them aware of all the programs they have and how they can be helpful in their cities.
“We realized it was important for us to reach out and meet these elected officials,” Andrea Helms Director of Communication said. “We are helping to bring awareness to their community.”
Helms stressed that an important thing to remember is there will always be a need more food.
