Society to hold raffle to buy foreign films

The International Film Society wants to spread the love for foreign films to the residents of Southlake. How? The Carroll Senior High School Club will hold a raffle and use the proceeds to buy films to donate to the Southlake Public Library’s virtually non-existent foreign film collection.

The idea for the fund-raiser came after senior Lauren Wilcox, founder and president of the school’s International Film Society, went to the public library to rent a film for the society to watch at the meeting.

“I just saw the collection, and it could really use some improvement. There is no reason why our club couldn’t help,” Wilcox said.

Wilcox feels that sharing foreign films is important. She has lived abroad in multiple countries, including France, Italy and the UK and has developed a love of foreign films that she first shared with Carroll Senior High when she started the International Film Society last spring.

Now the group is branching out to share with the community.

Raffle prizes include four tickets to a Texas Rangers baseball game, a signed Tony Romo jersey and a Cowboys pennant signed by both Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips.

They will be selling $3 raffle tickets in the CHSH cafeteria Sept. 21 - 24. Tickets also will be available at the library Sept. 19 and at several Southlake sporting events.

“The library is very excited to be working with the CSHS International Film Society,” said city librarian Kerry McGeath. “We are looking forward to developing a strong international films collection as a result of their fund-raising efforts.”

Wilcox hopes to be able to purchase a large quantity of films for the library. The society is currently making a list of films that they would like to buy with the proceeds from the raffle. The list so far has more than 20 movies on it and includes such titles as “La Vie en Rose,” “Life is Beautiful” and “Mondays in the Sun.”

The drawing for the winners will be Sept. 25 during lunch at CSHS, and winners need not be present to win.
