Texas Football ranks Carroll third in the state

The 49th annual issue Dave Campbell’s Texas Football that hit newsstands late last week and yet again Carroll’s football team is chosen as one of the best squads in Class 5A.


The Dragons are picked third in the state according the magazines’ State Farm/Texas Football 5A Top 25. The top-ranked team in the state is defending Division I state champion Euless Trinity. Plano which moves over to Region I for the next two seasons is ranked second.

Carroll finds itself in possibly the toughest region. Region I is loaded with seven teams on the State Farm/Texas Football 5A Top 25. To go along with the three teams mention two more teams in the region are in the Top 10. Odessa Permian is ranked fifth and Abilene (No. 8). Also in the Top 25 are Allen (No. 14) and Arlington Bowie (No. 20).

In District 6-5A, Texas Football tabs Carroll to win its seventh consecutive district title since joining Class 5A. Hebron, which has won two district title during its two seasons in Class 5A, is picked second, followed by Flower Mound Marcus and Coppell. The top four teams make the playoffs. Lewisville was picked fifth and Flower Mound was selected sixth.

District 6-5A matches up against 5-5A in the first round of the playoffs and according to Texas Football that would setup playoffs matchups of Hebron against Keller Fossil Ridge and Carroll versus longtime rival Grapevine in Division II. In Division I, Marcus faces Colleyville Heritage and Coppell takes on defending Class 5A Division I state champion Euless Trinity.

The district has three players on Texas Football’s Super Team. Hebron offensive lineman Joel Gray is on the Super Team. Carroll defensive lineman Brayden Burnett and Flower Mound’s Collin Ashley are on the third team. Ashley is listed as a defensive back but will play wide receiver this year.

Seven players are on the magazines Texas Top 300 list. Marcus wide receiver Joel Free is a Top 20 players as is teammate Ty Cloud at offensive lineman. Flower Mound tight Craig Wenrick is on the Top 25 list.

The magazines Best of the Rest list features four players from the district including Coppell running Evans Okotcha, Coppell tight end Tony Trahan, Marcus offensive lineman Chase Douglas, Marcus and Hebron defensive lineman Stansley Mopanga.

The district is loaded with three top juniors in Carroll defensive lineman Jackson Richards, Marcus defensive line Daniel Noble and Marcus running back Stephen Hopkins. Coppell’s Jaxon Shipley is on the top sophomores list.
